You Won’t Like. Poor interior quality in lower trim levels. Sloppy handling and braking on lesser models. Coarse-sounding hybrid powertrain New for 2016 The all-new rides on an all-new platform and features a new exterior design, new powertrains, and a new infotainment system. Vehicle Summary Slotting below the full-size Impala and above the compact Cruze, the 2016 is a midsize sedan that’s available in front-wheel drive only. In addition to the gas-powered Malibu, a hybrid variant is also available.
Overview The 2016 Malibu’s three powertrain choices include a 1.5-liter turbo-four rated at 163 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft, and a hybrid that combines a 1.8-liter I-4 with an electric motor for a total system output of 182 hp. A six-speed automatic comes standard with the 1.5-liter while the 2.0-liter is paired to an eight-speed unit. The hybrid, on the other hand, is only available with the CVT.
EPA ratings for the 2016 Malibu are 27/36 mpg city/highway for the 1.5-liter, 22/32 mpg for the 2.0-liter, and 47/46 mpg for the hybrid. Standard and available features include Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system with a 7.0- or 8.0-inch touchscreen, navigation, a Bose premium audio system, 4G LTE connectivity, wireless phone charging, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, alloy wheels ranging from 16- to 19 inches in diameter, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, keyless entry/start, remote start, and a semi-automatic parking assist system. Safety The NHTSA gave the 2016 Malibu a five-star overall safety score (out of a possible five stars). In IIHS evaluations, the car received a Good score on all crash tests and a Superior rating on the front crash prevention test when it avoided a 12-mph impact and reduced speed of a 25-mph impact by 24 mph, allowing it to receive the Top Safety Pick+ award (Good is the highest possible score). On the IIHS’ new headlight safety test, the 2016 Malibu received a Poor rating. Available active safety features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, blind spot warning, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, lane change assist, following distance indicator, and rear cross-traffic alert.
What We Think In a of the 1.5-liter turbo-four-powered Malibu, we said that lower trim levels don’t have the best braking and handling performance due to the low-rolling resistance tires. Ride quality, on the other hand, is much improved and soaks up rough surfaces. The interior quality of lower-trim Malibus, however, is lacking with plenty of cheap bits used throughout the interior, particularly in the dashboard. In a of the 2.0-liter turbo-four-powered car, we said that it offered strong acceleration, better braking performance, and surprisingly good steering. On higher trims, the Malibu’s interior is a nice place to be, featuring better build quality and a user-friendly infotainment system. We said in a of the Malibu Hybrid that it offers great steering and a nice balance between ride and handling.
However, the hybrid powertrain got coarser the higher you rev it. Key Competitors.
